GRAZ ! A Three-Hour Tour

Part 2: Walking to the Schloßberg

It was a sizable walk into the old part of the city, but it was all downhill.  It was warm, muggy, mostly  cloudy.  Wonderful!

Once into old town, I liked this cloister belonging to the Minorite order, and its associated church.  You can read about it here (the sign tells by who and when what was built, but the interesting point for me is that it has been here in some form or other for almost 500 years!):

The street on which this church is located heads south toward a strange-looking building, a modern arts museum and center:

Beyond the square in front of the church one can see the Schloßberg (Schlossberg) which is our destination for the day:

But to reach that hill we first must cross the Mur river:

Turning to look back from this bridge, the church and its square a nice view:

Looking upstream (northward) from this bridge shows a weird but fun contraption, the Murinsel, an artificial island with a restaurant in its middle:

Of course we have to go take a good look:

What is this?  It looks like there is a cog railway going up this steep hill:

It is time to go up this hill, and just off the Murinsel, we get to admire some rapids on the Mur:

Now we restart our journey toward the Schloßberg from which the city can be seen very nicely.  Between buildings it now comes into view and we head toward it:

Looks like we have a choice: go up the stairs or take an elevator.  The choice was rather obvious to me:

The elevator lets you out near the clock tower:

But the Schloßberg and its city views are the subjects of the next set of pages.
