Four Scenic Rooms

Part 5: Green Lake Room

First view into the Green Lake Room:

On the way into the Green Lake Room, there is this whimsical sign and formation: it looks like a little elephant turned away from you--

Need a hint?  Try this one:

The centerpiece of this room is that colorful wall, in the above photo, beneath which lies the Green Lake:

The next few photos attempt to give an idea of how massive and varied this wall is:

Sorry about the photo not being vertical, my fault:

And at its feet lies the water you have already seen, but also the Green Lake:

I dawdled here a bit, and at one point realized I was alone, the tour group had moved on, and I felt I was being watched:

She is doing her job.  Good.  But this is all focused on one side of this pretty room. Looking up shows lots of structure and depth, and strange colors made up by the camera grabbing all the light it can and getting its hues a bit wrong in the process:

I tried to look back up to where the trail is that you follow walking into the caverns from the surface.  It is above this colorful rock (made colorful by the camera sucking up all the light it can get, and misinterpreting its hue):

When you walk past this room on the way down into the caverns, this column dominates your view of the room:

Some of these images were of dubious quality in terms of some shaking, and some strange color enhancements in very low light.  Nevertheless, I think you can still see why these three rooms are called the "Scenic Rooms" of Carlsbad Caverns.

Come see for yourself!

You can download (click here) the same scenic room photos you just saw in a slide- show, set to music, that lasts less than 11 minutes.
