DESERT WILDFLOWERS NEAR LAS VEGAS, SPRING 2001

FLOWERS on US 95 SOUTH FROM BOULDER CITY, HOOVER DAM, TOWARD KINGMAN, ARIZONA

Part 2 of 5

Now we are on the Arizona side of the Colorado river, and the canyon directly across the river in this photo is where Nelson, Nevada is nestled (see page 1 in this series).

In addition to the ubiquitous 'suncup,' across the road in the next picture, directly on the roadside is a 'paperdaisy' bush, and in the foreground, of course, is some 'desert dandelion.'

I believe that there is a 'brittlebush' in the next photo, although it did not appear as a standalone bush, but grew more in a field like a type of 'daisy.'

But, let's focus on the clear majority at this locale, the suncups were spectacular:

At its edges, 'desert lupines' and 'desert dandelion' were doing well:

And in some locales the lupines almost dominated the scene,

And the 'apricot mallow' made an appearance as well in some corners,

A final show by the dandelions reminds us it is time to head south on US 93 again:

And there is is:  southbound US 93:

It didn't take much more than this view to have us swerve off the road once more: 'Mexican poppy,' a subspecies of the California poppy, in a setting of creosote and cholla,

Trying to catch the flowers wide open in a good wind wasn't easy:

A hypothetical coyote might see this flower field this way:

Suddenly the wind stopped, and flowers held still for a close-up:

Finally, this little plant made a great showing in the sand along the orange-gold-yellow poppies.  We will see more of these pretty, large, white flowers at our next stop:

Another day well spent.

But of course there were other days, other locations, and other flowers, as you can see by visiting the other pages in this series.
