On the salty flats near Badwater is a place not far from the road where you can get up close and personal with the very salty clays that make up the bottom lands of the Badwater area:

This place has a sign describing it well crystallized salts and solidified clays make up this very jagged landscape:

This next photo shows that where we are grades into a more salty layer, not as jagged, as at the margins of the Badwater plains. There is more salt, less clay, at these margins, so they are not as jagged:
Here is some of the salty cemented clay with fine embedded rocks up close:

And here is a last view, looking toward the Panamint Range where I will take a walk later (see below):
