A Half Day in Semmering

Part 5: The train ride down from Semmering

As just mentioned on the previous page, the 41 miles of railroad that climbs into the mountains up to Semmering is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the marvel of 19th century engineering that it represents.  It is the main rail route from Vienna to points south like Venice and Ljubljana (there was standing room only on the train to Ljubljana that I took out of Vienna, hence no photos on the way up).

So here are some views from the way back down into the very pleasant lowlands with their small rolling hills, where we will visit Eisenstadt after three trains from Semmering.  The connection times were 4 and 5 minutes, respectively, I made both with time to spare!

Next stop, Eisenstadt and its trees and palace!
