PART 4: Driving Home in Driving Rain
![]()
I took no pictures on the way to Bure from Paris because it was raining, and although there were worthy sights the photos would have been poor.
So now, on the way home to Paris, we are again driving in rain and the sun is already down, so the opportunity for photos is worse, but it is my last opportunity.
The setting is rolling hills with valleys that have streams after rain and a few full-time rivers. The country is set in limestone, which means the soils are not the best but do support a variety of agriculture (grains and hay mostly). The area used to be an iron-mining and smelting area, but that has been gone for a long time.
There is great local interest in and support for Andra's waste management research and disposal work. It seems to promise some degree of economic development for the area.
Right outside the site are grain/hay fields:

Driving away, just beyond the horizon in the above photo, took us past some villages and nice small valleys.
This village is where my Andra host spent a part of his recent life, and the general area is where he grew up, so he was quite enthused about the place and its people, which was nice. His former house is in this picture (red roof, uphill, right of center, he remembers it --and the rural life-- fondly):

And the villages nearby were generally small and agricultural:

There is precious little to say about the rest of the ride home to Paris. The road wound through forested lands in nice valleys like these.

Once we got on the tollway and sped up to the limit, it was quite dark and the camera was of no further use, so that's it for this trip! Thanks for joining me.
