(2) Sunset on the Giens Peninsula where my first set of meetings took place
![]()
So where is the Giens Peninsula ("Presqu'ile" in French)? It is south of Hyeres, and southeast of Toulon:

Where I stayed, and where my meetings were (sponsored by the European Commission's Research Directorate) was at the very eastern tip of the peninsula, where a resort belonging to the VVF group is located:
With some errands to take care the first day plus a rather full meeting schedule (the meeting in Toulon afterward, sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Agency based in Paris, began just hours after this meeting was over on Wednesday, barely enough time to pack up and get there). So, there was only an early morning and an evening for acting like a tourist on the Giens Presqu'ile.
Hence the two picture pages cover an evening after the day's meeting (this page), and then another page for the next morning before the start of that day's meeting.
This is what the view was from the veranda of the meeting place: the isle in the distance is called the Porquerroles. Ferries ran from this peninsula to that island.

The last rays of sun were showing in the higher trees:

This told me I had to hurry down to the shore to catch the sunset, on the way to the shore there were more illuminated trees:

But the approach to the shore was all shaded now:

Nevertheless, once on the shore, there was still light (this is the same area I came to for seeing the sunrise):

It seemed to make sense to go west at this time, and catch the last of the sun:

The water was clear, clean and inviting at about 70 degrees F, and some of our group did swim, I did not, to my regret.

Looking to the far southwest showed a lighthouse at the west end of the island:

Looking directly west at the last of the sunset also showed there to be a lighthouse at the west-end of the peninsula:

As the sun set, the wind blew, and whitecaps surrounded the ferry to the Porquerroles:

And then it was time for dinner. And a good night's sleep.
