(5) A visit to the south rim of Provence's Grand Canyon.

AN ORIENTATION (directions and map) IS GIVEN AT THE START OF THE NORTH RIM PAGE
As noted at the start of the north rim page, this visit to the south rim was preceded by a quick revisit to the western end of the north rim to get some pine-tree photos and see the bridge that goes to the south rim at the western end from above.
Here is that Luberon river as it exits the canyon at this bridge:

To the west of the bridge lies the lake, Lac du Ste. Croix:

That low sun reminds me that I need to get up into the canyon, so I do, and this is the first turnout once on the mountain and into the canyon:

A wonderful view, yes, but as I scramble a little bit I see a glow on the north wall that reminds me that behind me, the sun must now be setting!

Sure enough, I walk over to see, and there is a sunset in progress:

That is quite pretty, sure, but when I look up I see it is a long way yet to my goal: the highest point on the south rim road:

There was another, intermediate overlook before reaching the highest point. but I took only one worthwhile picture there, of the sun on a high point on the north wall.
I wanted trying to reach the highest point before the last of this sunglow was gone.

When I go to the highest point, I saw these views and was happy, the sunset was perfect, it still threw some light at the higher peaks (the first saddle in the wall on the left was our first stop):

This next view gives a nice look at the highlands to the north of the canyon, and reminds one that we are still in the Alps:

In the other direction, the views were also memorable even if not so colorful anymore:

Note the start of some pink in the clouds of the above photo. Continuing eastward as it got darker I was quite pleased to see this colorful display of altocumulus-standing-lenticular, or ACSL (a cloud type denoting high winds aloft, a visible warning to pilots of small planes):

As it got darker it was harder to get my exposure correct to allow meaningful pictures to be taken. Here is one in false light from the end of my tour of the south rim:

So, that is the end of my Grand Canyon de France tour, I am glad I came. I am also glad you came along on the virtual version of my tour!
