Snow Canyon, Utah

PART 2:  Views from the Butterfly Trail

When you first start down the Butterfly Trail from the road, you quickly find yourself on the edge of the canyon, with a grand view to the north:

Then you look down and see you have to walk down a rather steep, but stable, sandstone slope:

At the bottom of the slope you can see where you just came from:

You have just walked down captured sand dunes, such as the petrified dunes to the right in the next photo:

It is amazing how much vegetation you can get in a protected spot with water flows meeting in a spot with some shade:

The trail then takes you north along the base of the ridge you just descended:

After some time you turn west and see a gigantic basalt-flow, with some sandstone sticking up through it.  You are almost at the junction with the Lava Flow Trail at this point:

Looking back to the south also gives a nice view toward the southern end of the canyon:

Views from the Lava Flow Trail are on the next page.
