Iberian City at Ullastret

Parts of the city are actively being investigated, witness the 'keep out active archaeological site' sign and the digs in progress:

Note the Pyrenees in the far distance of the above photo. It gives some perspective on the area important to my story.  Speaking of my story, Ullastret is where my heroine's grandparents lived and where she first went for shelter when things got bad at home.

More perspective is gained by looking south from the hilltop village.  The valley at the time of my story was largely a lake.

The view toward the coast (east) is likewise looking out over fields that were then mostly under water.  The hilltop city had a natural moat, but one perhaps used to transport goods via the connecting river as well as one used to defend the city.  It would be hard to move siege machinery through water and mud.

The city's defenses were well maintained, and parts of the larger wall on the side of the hill more exposed still stand:

This may have been part of the bath house:

A view to the northeast again looks toward Emporion:

A bit more easterly, with some magnification, a Medieval castle comes into view on its own dramatic hilltop:

The city wall has been excavated toward the north, exposing foundations of townhouses using the city wall as their back wall and sharing each other's side walls:

OK, I simply liked this tree!

And with such a luxurious celebration of green and life, it is a good time to move on to another location, once again.  Go to the Spain 2004 page to select your next destination.  Please.
