It was a pretty pragmatic strategy for surviving, actually. Charles seems to have recognized
that, and never could be convinced he should make war on
these French collaborators,
his cousins. Joan thought they should be attacked to make them change their allegiance.
Charles took a few decades, but
achieved the same aim, with much less bloodshed.
But, we will never know if the aggregate suffering of a peasantry, working extra hard
and eating less to pay
tribute, is somehow offset by knights and foot soldiers not being
killed or being pressed into active duty. After all, they stayed alive at the continuing
expense of that same peasantry. Nothing is easy or black and white, good or evil, in
that time or even now. So here comes Joan to Chinon. She has already convinced a local noble to outfit her and provide her an escort to see the dauphin. Upon arrival she is invited to have an audience with the dauphin in a ballroom full of courtiers, the professional staff and hangers on. The government bureaucracy with all its relatives and influence-buyers and -sellers. |
