and the road to Carol

This is the place where Beatrice and her girls lived with her second husband while he lived and after he died. This is also the place where she had her last contact with the vicar of Montaillou. And it is the place where she and Barthelemy caused tongues to wag and heads to shake with disapproval. A widow and a priest young enough to be her son? Did not pass the very loose test of what was morally acceptable in this town.
Nevertheless, I found this place to have an air that is both light and lighthearted. It is where I would picture
a well-to-do minor noble like Beatrice's second husband to have a very nice home.
Little of the modern town seemed relevant to our story. perhaps this scene of bridge and church is close to what was to be seen from this spot 700 years ago.


And definitely the Ariege river would have looked like this:

They also seem to have had a home on the road to Carol. I found the countryside between Varilhes and Carol to be pretty, green and bright, a great place for a country home:

This modern home is not unlike one I could picture mother Beatrice and her children living in:
